About James

I am an undergraduate Bachelor of Science student towards a major in Biology. My area of research interest is botany. I grew up locally in the Texas Coastal Bend and have always been fascinated by the biodiversity of the area. One of my favorite hobbies is growing native plants such as Anaqua (Ehretia anacua). I am an Eagle Scout from Portland, Texas as well as a Texas Master Naturalist of the Mid-Coast chapter.

My research in the Daru Lab revolves around on testing Darwin’s Naturalization Hypothesis on the flora of San Patricio County in Texas. To do this, I am gathering many samples of native and alien plant species known to occur across the county and will be extracting DNA to reconstruct a phylogeny of the flora for my analysis. I have two other interests in microbiology and geology.
